"Looking Deeper into the Nature of Things"
Part 3
Universal Consciousness
Language is both an advantage and a handicap. Language
can give expression to thoughts and feelings, but
it can also hinder our deeper understanding of the
Universe. As parents, teachers, and guardians of
the next and future generations we have to make
sure that our vocabulary and the meaning we give
to our words create a context in which Higher Consciousness
can emerge in our children's developmental process.
The perspective from which your child forms its
understanding and relationship with the Universe
will determine the kind of society in which you
and I grow old; the legacy we leave to our unborn
generations. And it should be obvious from the levels
of homicide, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and
institutionalization of youth that the current perspective
is not the correct one.
The Western Cornucopia Worldview (the dominant perspective
of our times) says that the earth and the universe
are simply 'resources', dead matter, inanimate,
and unconscious. And this perspective has shaped
the conditions that are destroying global ecosystems
at this very moment. The Indigenous Ecological Worldview
( traditional Native American culture for example)
says that the Earth and the Universe are alive and
conscious; Sentient Beings. If our children can
at an early age, master the wisdom that "The Universe
is Alive and Conscious" we will help them to unlock
their Higher Consciousness and the Universe will
not only speak to them, but It will speak to us
through them. Actually, It already does! But some
of us are hard of hearing, some of us are hardheaded,
and most of us claim to be too busy to pay attention.
So here is a little activity you can get involved
in with your children. It will teach them the value
of a dictionary, the use and limitations of language,
and at the same time open their minds to the Indigenous
Ecological Worldview. Rather than simply describing
the exercise lets try it ourselves. Get a dictionary
handy. Now lets look at the two worldviews in the
context of language and its use. Look up the word
Alive.
Alive - (1) having life: not dead or inanimate.
Now lets look up dead!
Dead - (1) deprived of life: having died. (2) a.
having the appearance of death; lacking power to
move, feel, or respond; Unresponsive. Lacking power
or effect.
Remember that it is we who have created the words
and given them their definitions. It is we who have
imbued these words with meaning and assumptions.
So I ask you, "In what way is the Universe simply
a resource, dead matter, inanimate, and unconscious?"
Can you see how the meaning we have given to the
words can constrain our ability to recognize the
truth or even question our cultural worldview? Do
this with your children. Discuss these questions
with them. It's not so important that you provide
conclusive answers. It's much more important that
you stimulate their curiosity and openness. Does
the Universe lack power to move? Does It lack the
power to feel? Is the Universe not aware of our
presence? Has It not demonstrated its capacity to
respond to our abuses, and to our attempts to correct
them? Has It not organized Itself manifesting order
out of chaos? Does It not undulate in Its own emotional
rhythms of quiet calm and boisterous excitement?
Do not plants, animals, and even so-called inanimate
objects demonstrate an ability to respond to the
presence of human beings and the energy of human
consciousness?
We're just scratching the surface here because I
want you to do this work with your children. I want
you to explore and challenge the old cornucopia
paradigm. Go right on down the list of definitions
and see how thin is the line. Just stretch the meaning
a little bit beyond our cultural assumptions and
we come to the same understanding as the Ancient
Ones, the Ancestors. They understood that The Universe
is Alive! Lets look up 'consciousness'.
Consciousness - (1) the quality or state of being
aware esp. of something within oneself; the state
or fact of being conscious of an external object,
state or fact. (2) the state of being characterized
by sensation, emotion, volition, and thought: MIND.
Once again, we (human beings) are the ones who set
the cognitive limitations on these words and their
meanings; and then we pass them on to our children.
The engineers of the Global Consumer Culture have
used the framework of meaning to separate US from
the rest of creation. And in this separateness there
is the opportunity for profit. And your and my children;
in fact, you and I have been sacrificed at the altar
of profit by being nurtured on the idea that only
WE are Alive and Conscious; and everything else
is 'animal' or 'inanimate'. Look!!! You and I experience
consciousness as an event taking place in the head.
It's the cultural meaning that we've attached to
the word. BUT, the fact of the matter is every cell
in our bodies makes the same chemicals and neuro-peptides
that the brain makes when it 'thinks'. In other
words, every cell in your and my bodies is 'thinking'
and communicating with other cells; responding to
ever changing conditions and circumstances. Aware
of change! Adaptive! By the time you and I think,
"Oh! I'm thirsty." every other cell in the body
has already 'realized' the body's condition (thirst)
and taken appropriate action to retain water until
new supplies arrive. Global Warming is another example.
We can choose to express Global Warming in any language.
But to limit our children's understanding of the
Indigenous Ecological Worldview is to guarantee
the ecological metamorphosis of this planet. And
there is no guarantee that humans will survive.
According to the experts, what we are creating today
is an environment that in a few generations will
be best suited for the survival of rodents and insects,
micro-organisms, and highly adaptive predators.
According to the Old Wise Ones, The Universe is
Alive and Conscious. According to modern Scientist,
the essential energy that underlies all creation,
the Unified Field is Alive and Conscious; Intelligent
and fecundating. Allowing your children to understand
and experience the Universe as a Living and Conscious
Entity will unlock for them what the Ancestors call
the Akashic Record, The History of the Beginning
and The Record of All Things. They will be open
to the messages that so many of us ignore until
we snap our finger and exclaim, "Damn! I knew I
should have...!!" Ah! The inevitable finger pop.
And the truth is that you DID know!! You did KNOW
that you should go ... or not go ....; should have
made that telephone call to ..., or not made it.
Whatever the issue, I know that you have heard the
Universe speaking to you thousands of times and
regretted NOT LISTENING. Its messages may come in
a sudden gust of wind, or a shooting star; or in
a key sticking in a lock, or an unexplained anxiety.
It may come on the wings of a bird flying overhead
or in the timing of a street light on our drive
home. It may come as an unexplained talent or gift
that you have for knowing certain things for which
you have no remembrance of being exposed. However
you have experienced IT, I know you have. And the
question is, Will you continue to deny IT the recognition
of being Alive and Conscious? Which worldview will
you teach to your children? Will you free their
minds and open the vortex to elevated and profound
knowledge and knowing? Or will you imprison them
in the cultural framework of meaning and make loneliness,
separateness, and disempowerment your legacy to
them? An interesting article you can read appeared
in the Ideas section of the Arizona Republic on
Sunday, April 8, 2001 entitled, "As science advances,
conflict with religion fades" The article states
that, "The Lagoon Nebula is a star-forming region
of gas 5,000 light-years from Earth. It is not uncommon
to hear scientists say the fine-tuning of the universe
hints of intelligent design." A good place for you
to start your exploration of this important worldview.
The Universe is Alive and Conscious; Universal Consciousness.
The significance of your decision will become even
more apparent in our next installment to this series
of articles on Pure Potential. As I mentioned in
previous installments, we come into the world with
a Purpose. We bring that Purpose with us but in
the trauma of birth, we forget. And so at birth
begins our journey of Remembering. That's the title
of our next installment: Remembering. Remembering
is the process of communicating with the Universal
Mind; Opening the Akashic Record and seeing YOUR
PATH laid out before you.
